DONATO DOZZY
Here at Inner Varnika we generally have a moratorium on the words 'excited' and 'thrilled' due to their chronic overuse and subsequent devaluation. With this in mind, it is with sober titillation that we announce the return of Donato Dozzy to IVX 2023.
For those who were not present, Donato Dozzy's last appearance at Inner Varnika took place in 2015, under a rare full lunar eclipse on a clear night, the narrative arch of which was sharply mirrored by the story told throughout his performance. We danced together under this twin happening of shadow and sound, and those who were there are unlikely to forget it. Eight years later, it is Donato Dozzy who will orbit the Earth, our Venus returning to cast his own increasingly large shadow across the Djargurdwurrung plains in a Victorian exclusive. Miss it, and you might be up for seven years of bad music, waiting for him to cross our skies again…
For enthusiasts of the subgenre of ambient minimalist acidic techno, Donato Dozzy is our benevolent bespectacled leader with an irresistible and ecstatic power over our bodies that starts in the chest and oozes down to the feet and up to the mind. Without seeking it, fame has gradually enveloped Donato by virtue of his pure, unhurried exploration of biomimetic and thumpingly tribal sounds, resulting in impeccable quality dance music. However, no matter how furious and exaltant his sets become, they never lose the essential elements of human warmth and deep danceability and they never spiral into aggression, severity or excessive noise. It is this feature which sets him apart as a techno technician and his appeal is evident even to those not following the cannon.
When the Voices from the Lake album was released in 2012 with fellow Italian producer/DJ Neel, the result was an instant classic masterpiece of unfurling ambient aquatic beauty that is impossible not to listen to from start to finish and is also an effective and safe form of hypnotic pain relief for women in childbirth. This live collaborative project grew out of the experience of playing in the open air of Japanese mountains at the Labyrinth, a festival where Dozzy has cultivated a special place for himself as a mountain techno spirit, usually playing the closing spot as the sun sets and friends prepare to say goodbye to each other until next year.
Myriad other projects abound for this dedicated artist. Donato Dozzy has no side hustle. Solo productions, collaborations with vocalist and classical musicians, remixes, public art installations and gallery installations. Instead of writing further, you may as well listen for yourself.
